Powerhouse drummer Cindy Blackman is a commanding jazz musician, also known for her work backing retro-rock icon Lenny Kravitz. With a kinetic attack, she's ideally equipped to pay tribute to the amazing Tony Williams, whose unique rhythmic genius was immediately evident when he joined the Miles Davis band at 17. Williams soon invented a new and hugely influential drum set vocabulary. He was a key pioneer of '70s fusion in the astonishing band Lifetime (with John McLaughlin and Larry Young), and stayed at the forefront of jazz as a leader on Blue Note until his death in 1997. Blackman was mentored by master drummers Art Blakey and Alan Dawson, going on to formative gigs with saxophonists Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson and Pharoah Sanders. With fire and finesse, she provides an opportunity to hear one of the true disciples of Tony Williams, perhaps the greatest drummer of his lifetime -- or any other. Doors at 6, show at 8pm. $18 adv., $20 at door.

|
Urban Zen Center at the Stephan Weiss Studio
711 Greenwich St.
The FitTown Town Hall will bring together advocates for child health and present solutions that enhance physical and emotional health and wellness for children and teens in the home, at school and in the community. The goal is to engage parents and school staff as agents of change in bringing proactive health and healing practices to American youth.
Wednesday, March 10th
10am - 12pm: Nutrition in Schools
This panel discussion will focus on identifying ways to get more school administrations to take an active part in providing nutritious balanced meals for students, especially breakfast, and the integration of more fiber-rich and whole foods into school lunchrooms. It will touch on rallying community organizations to enhance their involvement in this role and to help parents better understand the benefits, both academically and socially, of ensuring their children eat nutritious meals with a strong selection of vegetables and fruit.
1230pm - 230pm: Creating a Healthy Environment
Including Health Coordinators who are carrying out HealthCorps' FitTown USA community work with students, the panel members will discuss how they're identifying areas of their home, work and community environments that warrant enhanced health and wellness efforts. Part of the discussion will detail HealthCorps' use of web mapping to chart the challenges, opportunities and resources they have identified through photovoice technology in their schools. The discussion will touch on panelists' personal experience in working with youth and how they feel we can improve the health and safety of underserved populations.
3pm - 5pm: Food Thought in Underserved Communities
This panel discussion will focus on the movement to bring more integrative health practices to often neglected communities. Urban green markets and green carts are being established in former "food deserts." Health experts are highlighting the benefits of sustainability and the "slow food" movement where locally-grown foods are more prevalently used in preparing meals and individuals take time to sit and eat with family or friends. Yoga is becoming familiar to inner city youth and students through programs like HealthCorps and Power Living. Education experts are recognizing the correlation of nutrition and staying physically active to academic performance, stress control and career opportunity.
Thursday, March 11th
10am - 12pm: Kids Going Green
This panel discussion will focus on the "green movement" broadening its appeal to America's youth through such community organizations as the NYC Food and Fitness Partnership and such school-based programs as Teen Iron Chef. A back-to-nature movement is taking hold where inner city youth, including HealthCorps students, are visiting organic farms like the Sylvia Center?s Katchkie Farm and learning about organic gardening first hand. Urban gardens are springing up in formerly blighted neighborhoods and a renewed interest in farming and nature?s wonders is traversing the nation.
1230pm - 230pm: Exercise, Music and Art Therapy for Kids
This panel discussion will feature a diverse group of individuals and organizations devoted to bringing creativity and movement to kids and teens so they can better interact with their peers and have fun during the learning process. Many of the arts also entail interesting cultural components, like Brazil's Capoiera martial arts and Zumba's Latin fitness workouts. The goal is to show parents the importance of the arts and exercise to a child?s development and health and to hear firsthand how practitioners in these areas have influenced youth in positive ways.
3pm - 5pm: Spirituality and Mental Resiliency
On this panel, participants will highlight their work in helping kids and teens combat depression and confusion through enlightening healing practices -- yoga, meditation and traditional therapy. Amid the scholastic world?s preoccupation with test scores, a student's spiritual side is often neglected. Fortunately members of this panel are engaged in addressing mental resiliency and in many cases bringing their beneficial healing practices to schools in under-served communities. Panelists will discuss the many successes that inspire them to broaden their reach to more schools and neighborhoods.

Keller Williams has built a career on his uncanny ability to captivate a packed house -- all by himself. He's been called a "one-man band." A "solo cult-hero." "Music's mad-scientist." All of which are clever labels for what seems to be an essential truth: On stage, Keller Williams works alone. For over 100 shows a year, Williams has proven himself to be a master of improvisational performance art. In his one-man show, he pads barefoot from guitar to bass to percussion stations, using looping effects -- and enough instruments to stock a strip-mall music store -- to layer sound atop sound until the stage swirls with a full-blown composition. While Keller has made liberal use of technology throughout his career, he knows that musicianship is ultimately a human undertaking. With a seemingly unquenchable thirst for all genres of music - bluegrass, jazz, and -- who'd-a-thunk-it -- hard rock ? occasionally Williams puts unyielding faith in a backing band. Whether performing with solo or with Grateful Grass, Keller, Moseley, Droll and Sipe or Grunge Grass (just a few of his "band" projects), Keller Williams knows best how to please a music hungry crowd. Doors at 8, show at 9pm. $22.50 adv, $25 at door.

Solar1
2420 FDR Drive, Service Road East
In this workshop, participants will learn how to construct a circuit that gathers solar energy and releases it in bursts, and then use it in the creation of a small, light-powered, vibro-bot. These Bugbots will respond directly to the intensity of the light that they are exposed to, using solar energy to power two vibrating pager motors. On a sunny day they will skitter about frantically... On cloudy days they will move intermittently as they build up energy.
During the course of this workshop, participants will be introduced to the basics of solar-powered electronics and circuit construction. Each participant will solder their own circuit board and build a Bugbot of their own to take home. Participants need no prior experience in this field. Just come with a willingness to learn!
Registration for this workshop is limited to 15 participants, so sign up today!
It will be on March 13, from 1 - 5, and will be taught by Christian Cerrito Resident Researcher Interactive Telecommunications Program, NYU. His website.

Trinity Church
89 Broadway at Wall St.
On Monday, March 15 at 7:30 PM, the Trinity Choir will be joined by the Trinity Baroque Orchestra as they perform Johann Sebastian Bach's Johannes-Passion. Although perhaps not as vast or well known as the Matthaüs-Passion, Bach's Johannes-Passion is, for some, more dramatic and varied. This beautiful work is inspired by chapters 18 and 19 of the Gospel of John.
Andrew Parrott, Music Director of the New York Collegium and one the most widely respected scholars and conductors of Early Music, will lead the choir and orchestra through this performance.
Intimately presented in the Gothic magnificence of Trinity Church, the concert will feature the purest of voices in changing arrangements from full choir to small ensembles and solo performances.
Tickets may be purchased by visiting trintywallstreet.org/tickets or at the Trinity Church gift shop located on Broadway at Wall Street.
